From Ubud we headed for Sanur, a beach resort hotspot on the eastern side of the country and a scuba diver’s paradise. We had heard that there was a specific dive spot at Nusa Penida where manta rays were frequently sighted - it’s even named ‘Manta Point’ for this reason - so of course we had to go and check it out.
Bali isn’t the cheapest place to dive but we managed to get our day on the dive boat including equipment, hotel transfers, lunch, and two dives down to £85 pp after a considerable amount of time spent haggling with the tour operator stall vendors. Considering the prices had started at around £125 per person, not including equipment, we felt fairly pleased with our discount and it seemed worth it. After all, how often do you get a chance to dive with manta rays?
Sure enough, the rays we were promised materialised around halfway through our first dive and suddenly the cost of the experience seemed very reasonable. We also managed to catch a glimpse of a black tipped reef shark.
On our second dive, we came across a truly gorgeous sea turtle. Neither of us had ever seen one before so that was another highlight.
I am definitely never diving without my GoPro again!
The reef was gorgeous, possibly the most varied and lively I had ever seen.
Crystal Bay at Nusa Penida is well worth a visit if you’re into scuba diving or snorkelling and ever in Bali. The two I did here definitely ended up being two of my favourite dives of all time.
I can’t believe the next time I’ll be diving will be on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia - it certainly has a lot to live up to now. I'll let you know how it compares!
