ONE SECOND EVERYDAY

5 August 2017

After spending a full year chronicling my travels around the world, I fell at the final hurdle. We returned home on 15th March and, after one last-ditch attempt to get everything I’d experienced up on the blog in the form of my Florida post, I became rather distracted. I returned home to friends, family, a new flat and – rather unexpectedly – a job offer to write for one of my favourite websites, Secret London.

THE SUNSHINE STATE

20 March 2017

We touched down in Miami on the 16th of January feeling very jet-lagged, but looking forward to the next leg of our journey. I’ve been dreaming about taking a road trip around the USA for years, so this was the moment I had been waiting for. We had arrived!

COFFEE AND COCKTAILS

25 January 2017

Our last stop in South America was Colombia, and as we were left with a bit of extra time in Bogotá, we did some research and decided to head to Salento - a town in Zona Cafetera famous for it’s coffee. We chose to stay in a hostel called Luciérnaga which we’d recommend despite it’s rather patchy wifi connection! The must-do in Salento is a coffee farm tour and there are loads to choose from. After a bit of research we settled on Finca Don Eduardo, the coffee farm attached to The Plantation House hostel, which ran tours in English everyday at 9am.

THE INCA TRAIL

22 January 2017

If I’m completely, brutally honest, South America was never high on my list of travel-musts. I might not have planned this trip had I been in charge of the itinerary, but a happy coincidence - in the form of my lovely boyfriend, Oliver - brought me to Peru, in December 2016. Here, we spent the last few days before Christmas doing something that I had always wanted to do, hiking the classic four day, three night Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu.

LAKE TITICACA

19 January 2017

During the time we’ve spent travelling, hiking has become an excellent way to pleasantly fill up a day without breaking the bank. So, when we arrived at Lake Titicaca, we were slightly disappointed to hear that the one notable hike from Copacabana (Lake Titicaca’s main tourist town) took place on Isla del Sol, an island we would have to take a ferry to and from, at a cost.

BOLIVIAN REFLECTIONS

16 January 2017

We arrived in Bolivia not really knowing what to expect. Starting in Argentina and Brazil had set a precedent for South America as being moderately expensive so Bolivia provided quite a stark contrast because the cost of living in Bolivia is much lower. Although accommodation costs remained fairly steady (around £5 per night each), food and goods were miraculously cheap in comparison to what we had been paying in previous countries.

VIVA BRAZIL

13 January 2017

Unfortunately, my fear of having my camera stolen followed me to Brazil, so this blog post is also going to be supplemented with a couple of Instagram photos. What I do have, however, are a few recommendations for anyone planning a trip to the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. While Rio was a rather out-of-the-way stop on our South American itinerary, we felt it was important to see, so we packed our backpacks (for the hundredth time) and hopped on a flight from Foz do Iguaçu to Rio International Airport.

DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA

10 January 2017

After an incredible week spent scuba diving on a live-aboard boat on the Great Barrier Reef, and another lovely week living in luxury at our friends' place in Auckland, New Zealand, we set off on the next leg of our world tour. South America. From Auckland we took a direct flight to Buenos Aires. From this point on The Three Musketeers became the Fantastic Four as we met up with another friend of ours - Tom’s girlfriend, Liv.

LAZY WHITSUNDAYS

7 January 2017

Once we got far enough north, the Australian weather we were waiting for finally materialised. It had even started to get too hot to sunbathe by the time we got to North Queensland due to the lack of wind. So where better to catch a tan and keep cool than on a sailing trip around the beautiful Whitsunday Islands?

THE GREAT (AND COLD) OCEAN ROAD

15 November 2016

It’s safe to say that we were all rather unprepared for the weather that awaited us along the south coast of Australia. It was unseasonably cold due to a series of storms which had put parts of Victoria on a ‘severe’ weather warning. Our plan of camping our way along the Great Ocean Road before heading up the east coast now seemed laughable.

ALTERNATIVE MELBOURNE WALKING TOUR

13 November 2016

Melbourne is renowned for its street art. Even our hostel had jumped on the bandwagon and hired graffiti artists to plaster the walls with colourful designs. We had heard that there was a great self-guided walking tour you could do through the city centre to see some of the best graffiti Melbourne offered, so, after a bit of research we headed to Flinders Street station to see for ourselves. I’ll reproduce the route here so if you ever happen to be in Melbourne you can go have a look too. I’d highly recommend it and it won’t take you more than an hour with ample stopping time.

FIELD OF LIGHT

4 November 2016

During our time in Uluru we were lucky enough to experience Bruce Munro’s Field of Light exhibition. This illuminated field of solar powered light stems was a once in a lifetime experience so I thought I’d share some of the photographs that my very talented boyfriend, Oliver, managed to take during our visit.

THE RED CENTRE

2 November 2016

After a final few days in Bali, in which I quite possibly managed to consume my own weight in mie goreng (fried noodles) and avocado juice, we packed our backpacks and hopped on a flight to Melbourne, Australia. Here, after an overnight pitstop in a rather chilly Melbourne hostel, we headed straight back to Melbourne Airport to board a flight to Uluru, more commonly known as Ayers Rock.

BALI'S MOST HAUNTED

6 October 2016

This was an unexpected post, but definitely the kind of experience I wanted to get down in my blog, so I felt like it deserved its own little corner of the internet. When looking up things to do near Sanur, Tom (one of the friends we're travelling with) discovered an abandoned theme park, called Taman Festival, which we decided we had to go and explore.

MESSING ABOUT ON BOATS

4 October 2016

From Ubud we headed for Sanur, a beach resort hotspot on the eastern side of the country and a scuba diver’s paradise. We had heard that there was a specific dive spot at Nusa Penida where manta rays were frequently sighted - it’s even named ‘Manta Point’ for this reason - so of course we had to go and check it out.

BALI STYLE

2 October 2016

After a three-month hiatus from travelling spent at home, working my ass off to try to save money, I was well and truly ready to hit the road again.

ANOTHER TRAVEL UPDATE

30 July 2016

Just a quick post to let you know where I am in the world at the moment! After getting back to England from my wonderful week in Mallorca I had planned to fly straight back out to Australia. However, I had by this point started to worry about how likely it was that I could immediately find myself a full-time job on my return to Oz (which I needed to have guaranteed in order to fund the second half of my trip).

UNA BODA DE MALLORCA

28 July 2016

After the initial shock of my grand entrance had worn off, I settled into what was my second ever holiday with Oliver and his family. It was so exciting to see Oli, especially after such a positive reaction from him to my surprise. We kicked the celebrations off in style with a gorgeous meal at Tahini, a sushi restaurant in Puerto Portals, with Oliver’s parents that evening.

THE ONE WITH THE SURPRISE

18 July 2016

When my mother and I decided that it would be quite a nice idea to surprise my boyfriend, Oliver, by turning up in Mallorca for his sister’s wedding, halfway through our time apart, we definitely failed to recognise quite how much deception this surprise was going to involve.

SOMEWHERE IN SYDNEY

17 July 2016

After my time on the Gold Coast I headed back down to Sydney for my flight home. I arrived at 8am on yet another overnight bus, one month after I first entered Australia. I had booked a cheap hostel on Hostel World because it claimed to have an early check-in option, from 9am.
